Claim Refugee Status in Canada

To claim refugee status in Canada, you will need to complete the refugee claimant process. This process involves several steps, including:

  • Arriving in Canada: You can arrive in Canada by land, air, or sea. If you arrive at a land border crossing, you will need to request refugee protection at the border. If you arrive at an airport or seaport, you will need to go through immigration and customs before requesting refugee protection.

  • Applying for refugee protection: After you arrive in Canada, you will need to complete an application for refugee protection. You can do this online or by paper. You will need to provide information about yourself, including your personal details, your reasons for claiming refugee status, and any documents that support your claim.

  • Undergoing a security check: As part of the refugee claimant process, you may be required to undergo a security check. This involves a background check to determine if you pose a risk to the security of Canada.

  • Attending a refugee hearing: If your application for refugee protection is accepted, you will be scheduled for a refugee hearing with the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB). At the hearing, you will be asked to explain why you fear persecution or other harm in your home country and why you need refugee protection in Canada. The IRB will make a decision based on the information you provide.

If your claim for refugee protection is accepted, you will be granted refugee status in Canada and will be able to apply for a permanent resident visa. If your claim is rejected, you may be able to appeal the decision or seek protection through another process, such as a humanitarian and compassionate grounds application.
